Last week John Oliver devoted a 20-minute segment to the anomaly (is that the right word? Maybe it’s “horror show”) that is Donald Trump and his rise to the political spotlight.
Oliver, much like what Trump’s supporters claim their messiah is doing, told it like it was. He rebuked each and every possible reason to support this terrible orange man (and, let the record show, there are only four reasons).
At the end of this segment, Oliver advertised a brilliant tool to help Americans distinguish between the name “Trump,” which, yes, carries certain connotations of success, wealth, and confidence, from the man Donald J. Trump, who connotes none of those things.
Oliver tells the audience that when his ancestors came to America, their name was Drumpf, and they later changed it to Trump (good move, Drumpfs). In his campaign to “Make Donald Drumpf Again” (brilliant), the staff at Last Week Tonight have set up a Chrome extension that detects the word “Trump” and replaces it with “Drumpf.”
And I have happily installed this extension. It’s free, and I giggle every time I see a headline like “Drumpf’s Softened Stance on Visas Alarms Some Immigration Critics” (even the New York Times can’t pull off “Drumpf”).
